Deftones
The Fillmore Miami Beach

The evening of Deftone’s sold out show at Miami’s Fillmore theater proved to be both a cathartic celebration of angst and an all round FUN rock show. Lacking that night were any pretensions that most seasoned artists with any artistic sense easily fall into. As the house lights dimmed and intro ambiance emanated through the PA, the band kicked into “Diamond Eyes.”

Indeed, the band broke down the “fourth wall” (in a way that I had not seen from them before) and connected with the fans in a visceral manner, all the while cracking jokes and grinning ear to ear. Chino’s screaming and squealing sounded more raw than ever, and with the band’s production crew syncing disorienting strobe lights with pivotal screams (the outro of Diamond Eyes and My Own Summer, for example), his voice became a terrifying force of nature – in a great way, of course. The rest of their lengthy set naturally included songs from their latest album Koi No Yokan. However, they played a healthy mix of fan favorites and deep cuts from prior albums, such as “Feiticeira”, from White Pony.

Amidst the show frenzy, Chino made sure to dedicate “Revi
ére” to the band’s original bassist Chi, before the song’s serene crescendo into a brutal climax.  Time seemed to slip by as they continued to not only play with passion, but genuinely look like they were having a blast onstage. And as a Deftones fan for nearly a decade, that is the most refreshing, reaffirming thing to see onstage, above all else.  –Julian Cires
